The Cleft
The Cleft, a former ministry of YWAM Amsterdam, was located in Amsterdam’s
Red Light District. The Cleft focused on mercy ministry and sharing the gospel
with tourists, homeless people, businessmen, prostitutes, drug addicts and
lonely people.
History
In 1979, YWAM rented a former hotel in the Red Light District for an evangelism
crusade. After the crusade YWAM bought the building and the Cleft came
into being. Since 1979 the Cleft has experienced eight team leader changes.
Many fulltime YWAM and volunteer staff have come through the years to pray,
serve, worship and evangelize in this village-like and unique multicultural
setting. Today, we are experiencing the heritage that has been passed down
to us through this long-term inner-city ministry.
The Lighthouse
In 2009, after 30 years of ministry in the Red Light District, the Cleft has gone through another transition. As the Lord has directed us to adjust the focus of our ministry, he has also made it clear that it was time to change our name; The Cleft has now become The Lighthouse. For more information about the transition, click here to read a letter of introduction to The Lighthouse.
A Lighthouse website is soon to come.
